“Let Me Tell You About Hazel” is a short 500-word story about the protagonist of Green Again.
Awakenings says: “The post-apocalyptic world of Askew’s imagining contains graphic violence that speaks to the trauma many survivors experience, and Hazel’s strength in living through it serves as proof that healing is possible both for those who can tell these stories and all those who read and experience them.”
As a survivor of sexual assault herself, it is apt that this short story about Hazel Fox will appear in The Nightingale. This art, poetry and prose magazine aims to make visible the artistic expression of survivors of sexual violence. Not only a magazine, Awakenings currently help survivors heal through art by providing year-round programming at their gallery space in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago.
